Most people may hate the thought of winter with all that cold weather, but this year people might actually look forward to winter. The reason people might be looking forward to winter is so they no longer have to worry about the spreading of the Zika virus. Most people think that mosquitoes simply die whenever winter arrives, and this is not the case.

The ways in which mosquito species survive the winter differs between species. The species of mosquito responsible for the transmission of the Zika virus Aedes aegypti survives by over wintering in the egg stage. When the temperatures in their environment drop below 50 degrees Fahrenheit the adult female mosquitoes drop their final clutch of eggs in water in as little as a half inch. The eggs will stay in a state of diapause a process that halts their development during the coldest months of the year. Once the temperature starts to rise again the eggs come out of their dormant stage and begin to hatch. One of the scariest things about this is that if the eggs were laid by an adult infected with the Zika virus the offspring will also have Zika when they emerge.

This winter make sure that your exercise caution when outdoors to protect yourself from mosquitoes. The following are some tips you can use to better secure you and your property from mosquitoes.

Make sure to inspect your property in its entirety for stagnate water . Mosquitoes lay their eggs in water and require water for the larval stage. It is also important to fix any leaky pipes or faucets where water can build up letting mosquitoes have a habitat to reproduce in. Mosquitoes need very little water to breed so any amount of stagnate water on your property should be drained.

Another tip is whenever outdoors make sure to apply an insect repellent that is at least 20% DEET for maximum results against mosquitoes.
