Researchers at the Boston Children’s Hospital and WebMd are looking for links between children’s increased asthma symptoms, and rodent exposure. The way that children or any person is affected by rodents is that the rodent’s fecal, or urine matter can mix with the air where humans breathe it in. This issue alone should freak you out, but the fact that this can also lead to respiratory problems like asthma should cause even greater concern. There are many allergy triggers for humans in our environment such as dust mites, pet dander, and also mold all which affect humans negatively.

One researcher Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul a allergy specialist at the Boston Children’s Hospital had the following to say about the focus of the research “In this study, we’ve identified the school as an important factor”. The study will try and find a link between children’s increased asthma rates, and rodent problems in said schools. Dr. Wanda Phipatanakul went further to say that these findings will not absolutely prove schools rodent problems were the cause of the increase, but will give us a better idea of what is happening. The next part of the study involves schools getting air purifiers and an “integrated pest management system” to see if that improves students’ respiratory health compared to schools without this system in place. Hopefully in the near future we will understand just how much rodent populations are affecting our children’s respiratory systems at school.
