In New York City three cases of the rodent-related disease Leptospirosis have been reported recently. One of the three cases of Leptospirosis even proved to be fatal to the person that was infected by the diseased rodent. Leptospirosis is transferred from the rodent host to the victim by coming into contact with infected rat urine. The three instances of this disease were located in the Grand Concourse neighborhood of the Bronx, as reported by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. The disease itself is rare but the recent report of these three cases might be a sign of a possible outbreak.
Leptospirosis is an infection caused by bacteria that can cause mild symptoms like headaches, muscle pains, fevers, but it also has more severe side effects. The more severe side effects include bleeding from lungs, or meningitis, and even kidney failure. It is estimated that seven to ten million people are infected by this diseases each year. The majority of cases happen in developing countries in coastal or tropical areas, but can occur anywhere. The severity of pest related diseases is highlighted in this current issue, and shows just how important a pest management plan can be to public safety.
The two others who were infected with Leptospirosis were released from the hospital after treatment.
